Historically fishing has been a major part of the Scarborough economy although it pales in comparison to tourism. Daily fish auctions are still held on the harbour's west pier. Along with fishing boats, other vessels sometimes visit Scarborough harbour carrying cargoes such as timber, grain and fertilisers. The east harbour area is primarily used by sailing boats. Pleasure trips are available on a daily basis throughout the summer for those that want to try deep sea fishing or sight seeing along the coast.
Scarborough Harbour and Light House

It is unclear when the Scarborough Light House was actually built, but it has been a prominent feature of Scarborough Harbour for a least two hundred years. People are welcome to wander around the light house and the various piers. It can be interesting watching the boats unload, and many people go fishing from the harbour walls. Scarborough Life Boat House (next to the harbour area) is also very popular with tourists.

The Harbour sits at the base of Scarborough old town and the Castle. A number of streets lead up into the town where Scarborough Market can be found along with a wealth of shops. Scarborough Castle is a dominant feature over the Harbour. Easy access to the Castle grounds is readily available from the harbour area.
