Engaging in regular exercise is a very important factor in promoting good health, and psychological well-being. Simply by reducing sedentary activities (i.e. watching television), and increasing physical activities (cutting the grass, going for a walk) will increase overall well being.

When exercising, it is better not to focus on losing weight, but to focus on following a healthy program of training and nutrition so that your body can find the best weight and composition for your own optimum performance.

There are many forms of exercise. A regular cardio-vascular program can require a great deal of commitment, and a high degree of mental and physical toughness. The rewards can be a lean, toned, healthy body, with more energy and endurance. Regular exercising will also increase self confidence, and help you realise a positive self image.

Running
The simplest, least expensive, and also rewarding form of exercise is running. A light run around the block three or four times a week will produce positive results, and, with commitment, will turn into a routine that can inspire the right amount of exercise for you. Running is not just a means to an end. It can have purpose in itself. It is time you take for yourself, or time with friends (a running club), it is time you can spend contemplating, being creative, and/or problem solving.

Circuit Training
Circuit training is one of the most holistic forms of exercise. Generally, circuit training is best approached through local sport clubs or gymnasiums. The objective of circuit training is to keep moving by allowing minimal breaks while working through a series of different exercises. Circuit training works by pushing your body aerobically, while simultaneously challenging your strength. You exercise a much wider range of muscles than other forms of exercise because of the wide range of routines involved. A great deal of dexterity is also required which keeps the mind focused on exercising. This limits the mind's ability to wander (as is generally the case with running), and has a positive effect, similar to meditating, in that it helps to clear the mind of troubling thoughts.

Weight Training
Almost any form of exercise will stimulate some degree of strength and muscle development which will help to control weight; and contribute to healthy bones, muscles and joints. These factors become more important with age. Weight training should be considered as another option in maintaining body strength and agility. It is advisable to discuss a weight training program with a trainer at a gymnasium. This is to minimise the risk of potential injury. It is important to warm up before weight training to create blood flow throughout the body thus preparing your muscles for the workout. A cooling down and stretching period is also recommended after the training session.

It is generally a good idea to consider your optimum heart rate when exercising. This is normally between 60% to 80% of your maximum recommended heart rate for people that exercise regulary. Complete the below information to calculate your target training zone for your heart rate.
