In late 1399, "Richard II" abdicated, and Henry IV came to the thrown as the first Lancastrian King of England.

In 1405 "Henry IV" grants custody of St Marys to Bridlington ending the association with the Citeaux. .

This century saw the largest and bloodiest battles ever fought in England. With the 100 year war with France (1337 - 1453), and the War of the Roses (1455 - 1485) being the most significant.

War of the Roses (1455 - 1485)

The War of the Roses was probably the most significant concern for people living in the north of England. The conflict was resolved when Henry Vll (representing the Lancaster family) married Elizabeth of York (representing the York family). This marriage united the two families. Henry created the Tudor rose, conjoining the White Rose of York and the Red Rose of Lancaster - starting of the Tudor period (1485 - 1603).

A Brief History:

1413 - "Henry IV" dies of a stroke, and Henry V takes the thrown. His main concerns are dealing with the deposed "Richard II", fighting with the French, the Scots and plots to overthrow the thrown, and political/religious movements such as the Lollards. His main achievement is the unification of the English and French crowns under his authority.

1420 England reclaims Normandy, and England's claim to the French thrown is recognized.

1422 "Henry V" dies, and it succeeded by 9 month old son Henry VI .

The French resist the English monarchy. This is the era of Joan Of Arc whose courage inspired the French to resist the English

1449 Normandy is lost to the French

1455 - saw the start of the war of the Roses between the Dukes of York and Lancaster for control of the thrown of England. The first battle was at St Albans . between the House of York, and the House of Lancaster

In 1460 the Yorkist win the battle of Northampton and Henry VI is taken prisoner by the Yorkist lords.
1461 - Henry VI is deposed, and replaced by Edward IV the late son of the Duke of York. The House of York is founded (1461 - 1485) civil war continues with the Yorkists winning the largest battle on an English battle field The Battle of Towton - re-confirms Edwards IV position as King of England.

1483 - "Edward IV" dies, and is succeeded to the thrown by his son Edward V for a short period before "Edward V" and his brother held in the tower, and Bishop Stillington declares the two sons as technically bastards, and Richard III takes the thrown.

1483-85 "Richard III" was the last King to reside at Scarborough Castle. He based a navy in Scarborough - expecting a Scotish invasion, and to resist Henry Tudor (later Henry VII) - He stays for periods of time in Scarborough with his Queen, Anne Neville , and makes Scarborough a county with Mayor, sheriff and 12 aldermen replacing the old bailiffs.

1485 - "Richard III" is killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field . Henry Tudor ( Henry Vll ) becomes King - founding of the House of Tudor (1485 - 1603), bringing to a close the "War Of The Roses", and Scarborough's status as a county also ends with the death of "Richard III".
