There is evidence of village settlement activity of the castle headland since the early Iron Age. The earliest visible remains are those of a Roman Signal Station from around A.D.370. These stations were used by the Romans as an early warning of enemy raider from the sea.
Scarborough Castle
The castle was first build by William le Gros (Earl of Albemarble) at around 1138. William led an army of Yorkshire Barons in a battle fort near Northalleton at around this time. Scarborough town (protected by the castle walls) was given a charter by Henry II, and has received further support from other sovereigns over the years.

King John (1201, 1210, 1213) visited the castle several times during his reign.
King Edward I held court at the castle in 1275.
The castle underwent several sieges between 1312 and 1648. Scarborough was ultimately the only royalist port on the east coast, and held out against Oliver Cromwell, until finally surrendered to Parliament in 1645. The current state of the castle can be attributed to Cromwell's siege - Cromwell ordered the castle partially destroyed to ensure it could not be used as a fortification again.
1665/6 George Fox (founder of the Society of Friends) was imprisoned in the castle in 1665 because of his religious principles. He was subsequently released in 1666 by order of the King.
Two German cruiser battle ships bombarded the town of Scarborough and the castle in 1914.
