The last Ice Age came to an end around 12,000 years ago when glaciers started their slow retreat. The flat country side of the Vale of Pickering reflect the glacier movements in Yorkshire. Britain was joined to mainland Europe at this time, and as the ice receded, people migrated into these new areas. An important site for evidence of human activity during this period is Star Carr near Scarborough. Early Mesolithic activities dating back about 10,700 years can be found here.

The area of Star Carr was originally excavated by J.G.D. Clark between 1949 and 1951. Further excavation and exploration of this well-known archaeological site continues to today.
These artifacts, and others are kept at the University Of Cambridge - Museum Of Archaeology & Anthropology

These earliest examples of humanity have demonstrated quite advanced technical skills. There is evidence that they used fire to clear the reed beds around their lake (Star Carr). They used tools for hunting, fishing and construction. They would have employed rudimentary farming (gathering) techniques such as gathering berries and wild seeds and keeping domesticated animals. This could, for example, be the result of saving orphaned wolf pups and raising them within their community creating mutually beneficial relationships. They lived in purposely build shelters, and seasonally moved to hunt game. Their dwellings were usually close to water (oceans, rivers or large lakes) which were used as a constant source of food, and perhaps bathing in the summer months. The diet of these people would have been mainly protein (meat) with seasonal greens, seeds, nuts and fruit.

It is reasonable to assume that they lived in extended family units or clans. A Strong sense of altruism towards their community and close social interaction must have been integral to their daily lives in the harsh environment in which they lived. It is doubtful that they could count more than a few digits, and highly unlikely that they had any written language.

Very little is known of the beliefs of these people. Many suggest that magic and the supernatural played a key role. It is believed that they worshipped the earth goddess perhaps at special locations such as hills, waterfalls, rivers or caves. They were very much in tune with their environment. They felt "a part of" rather than "owning" the land on which they lived.

The night was significant to their lives. The celestial bodies dictated when they should move north, south and what to hunt. It is likely that the light of the full moon was used for hunting large game, and the feminine cycle probably reflects this lunar/hunting cycle. Witch-craft (pagan beliefs), mostly invoked at night, may also reflect this distant way of life.

When considering evolution, three UNFEASIBLE events have occurred over millions of years by this time. First was the appearance of life from inorganic matter. The second was the unlikely evolution to living species, And the third was the rise of humanity. Each represents a new exponential magnitude of understanding.
