Edward VIII (1894 - 1972) Was King of England during 1936. He was the eldest son of King George V. He was King for most of 1936, but on 10 December 1936 he signed an instruction of abdication, and ceased to be King the next day. There may have been many factors (political reasons) for this decision, but a primary reason was his infatuation for a twice divorced American, Wallis Simpson, who he married shortly after abdication in France.

1936 Edward VIII
These examples of Edward VIII (missing the 2 1/2D BLUE) are the only British postage stamps printed representing King Edward VIII. Although popular with much of the working class British public, the more conservative regarded the Kings morals as an affront to Christian values (with speculation that he was involved in a succession of sexual liaisons with married women until introduced to Mrs Wallis Simpson).
