Little has been done to improve on humanity's inhumanity to humanity throughout the world during the first half of the first decade of the new millennium. The conflict between Israel and the Palestinians deteriorated substantially when Sharon came to power in Israel, and the situation was made even worse when George W. Bush was elected president in the US. Extremists in the Arab world launched the most horrific terrorist attacks against the United States on 11 September 2001 with attacks against New York and Washington DC. George W Bush hit back with his "War On Terror" campain by invading both Afghanistan and Iraq.

It is interesting to note that all terrorist attacks in the United States have been carried out by Americans, or people from countries that are considered allies to the United States either past or present. Neither Iraq or Iraqi nationals have ever attached the United States yet Iraq has faced the most explosive response by the "War President" on terrorism.

Devaluation & Regional Stamps
As well as supporting Bush's "war on terrorism", the United Kingdom has experienced intense debate on national identity especially in relation to the European Community and devaluation. Referendums and then the establishment of a separate Parliament of Scotland and Assembly for Wales, plus meaningful progress towards peace in Northern Ireland and the re-establishment of government at Stormont has provided a great deal of scope for debate, and it should be interesting to see how the United Kingdom evolves during the second half of this decade. Stamps to commemorate the devolution of Scotland and Wales were issued in 2001. With the shown stamps representing England.
One of the world's worst natural disasters, in living memory, hit the asian world in the form of a tsunami at the end of 2004 (December 26). An under ocean earth quake near Indonesia caused the massive tsunami which had devastating effects throughout the region, and as far away as India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The death toll may never be known, but estimates are above a quarter of a million people.
The International aid effort to the effected regions has been substantial, and this has led many to ask "could the tsunami disaster be the turning point for the world?" Many people would like to see "a war on hunger", "a war on global warming", and peace in the middle east.
