George VI (1895 - 1952) was King of Great Britain and Ireland from after Edward VIII abdicated the thrown in 1936 through to 1952. George (Albert Fredrick Arther George - also known as Bertie) was intensely shy and talked with a stammer. George VI was reluctant to take the thrown after Edward VIII abdication in late 1936, but he was eventually coronated on 12 May 1937.

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Coronation 12 May 1937

As the Duke Of York he fell in love with Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon. They were married on the 26th of April 1923. She provided a stabilizing influence in his life. They had two daughters (Elisabeth Alexandra Mary born 21 April 1926 AND Margaret Rose born 21 August 1930).

George VI supported Prime Minister Chamberlain policy of appeasement of Adolf Hitler before 1939, but also developed a very close relationship with Winston Churchill in order to protect both the UK nation and the Empire. Both King and Queen refused to leave London during the Blitz. Both King and Queen shared in the plight of the nation. They visited devastated areas and met with Civilian workers. The King even devised the "George Cross Medal" for civilian workers. The King also visited with troops abroad. The actions of the King and Queen were a great boost to national morale during the war.

1948 Olympic Games
In June of 1939 London was awarded the 1944 Olympics, but because of World War II the games were forced to cancel. A year after the war London was again selected for the 1948 Olympics. Because of the appalling shortages after the war, a great deal of improvisation was necessary to prepare for the games. School buildings were used to house athletes, and a temporary track was build at Wembley Stadium. The first real media coverage of the games was broadcast on local television.
