A whole range of Victorian Stamps were issued ranging in value upwards from the half pence red (1858 - 1870). Many different background patterns and designs were employed although they all maintained a profile of the queen.
1858 - 1870 - The Half Penny Red

These common half Penny Red Stamp were issued between 1858 and 1870. Notice that the print is OFF center to the right. This is very common for stamps of this period. Plate number were also shown on the sides but are generally difficult to read.

1883 to 1884 - Queen Victoria
Postage stamps made the sending and receiving of letters easily available to the general public and the quality and design of the Postage stamp improved rapidly, along with the charges to reflect weight and national or international travel. Notice the more lively colouring, and detailed design.
Many nations developed their own independent postal systems that were inter-linked creating a global network of commonwealth and non-commonwealth countries. In a sense, this mark one of the key events for the beginning of the information age...
These early postage stamps are highly valued by collectors, and are reasonably common. They can range in value from around a £1 for a good condition used stamp to well into the thousands for an un-used mint condition rare example. Please refer to an authoritative guide for dating and pricing.
Key Events:
A postal Union was signed between 22 countries in 1875. They were mostly European, but included the United States. Standard rates were agreed between participating countries. There was still a great deal of resistance within Britain against a standard rate, but the issue was forced when Canada initiated a Penny Post to Britain in 1898.
