People collect stamps for many reasons. Some collect stamps to be social. Some people collect stamps for educational reasons, and some people collect stamps for profit. For many there is a great deal of emotional satisfaction in stamp collecting.

Stamps cover a wealth of interesting topics such as history, geography, science and politics. Many people focus on a specific subject such as history, and will collect stamps reflecting this interest. Stamps are miniature works of art. They often reflect the interest and national bride of the countries they represent. For this reason, they can reflect the political and emotional sentiments of a given country at specific points in history.
Social Stamp Collectors
Many people collect stamps for social reasons. It allows them to forge friendships around a shared interest. People can put a great deal of effort into their stamp collection, and receive a great deal of satisfaction from displaying them. Stamp exhibitions, and stamp clubs promote this common interest.

Collecting stamps can also be emotionally rewarding. It can give a sense of order in a chaotic world. Many collectors spend hours researching their stamp collection, placing them in aesthetically pleasing order, and dwell on their intrinsic value.

Stamps for profit

Some people collect stamps for money. There are still rare stamps out there to be found. Many old letters or legal documents from ageing family members or businesses may contain interesting stamps. Browsing stamp shows and stamp clubs may also prove profitable. The value of stamps can be very subjective. Individuals put in a great deal of effort and emotion into their collections, and will go to great lengths to acquire a hard to find stamp.

Stamp clubs
Stamp clubs offer an avenue to share common interests. They can focus on specific age groups or topics. They often provide the means to buy, sell and exchange stamps. They can often be found through your local stamp shop.
You should concider the focus and general age of your group should you wish to start your own stamp club. It may be advisable to elect a president, secretary and treasurer. You should keep membership fees low, and decide on a common venue and location for your meeting. Providing inexpensive refreshments would enhance meetings. Don't be discouraged if every meeting isn't great. It may take time to build up confidence and shared interests.
